Elin Howe is next DMR Commissioner Elin Howe will begin serving as the DMR Commissioner on July 1, 2007. Elin has more than 35 years of experience in the field of developmental disabilities, including four years as Commissioner of the New York State Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities where she was responsible for policy development, planning, financing, regulating, managing and providing services to more than 75,000 people with mental retardation and developmental disabilities.

Since 2003, Elin has served as Vice President of Consulting Services at the Columbus Organization, which helps states and private agencies provide the highest level of services to people with developmental disabilities. The organization specializes in offering a full range of services to and both state and private sector community service organizations. In addition, Elin has worked extensively with parents, consumer and advocacy groups, private sector providers, organized labor and in legislative relations. On June 14th and 15th, Gerry Morrissey hosted meetings where Elin had the opportunity to meet with senior staff and to get to know DMR better. Please join us in welcoming Elin Howe to DMR and wishing her the very best as our new Commissioner.

I would like Dr Maguire to comment on what a parent/guardian should do when her child's DMR vendor provided, residential program is not providing appropriate care.

Where should the issues of unqualified staff, poor choice of food served and/or lack of recreational programming be reported? What should the complainant expect as a response and how will DMR help?

I’m concerned that DMR policies and practices seem to have reverted to pre-Boulet status, or worse. Currently they deny having a waiting list. Questions to them are answered with “The regulations aren’t written yet.” Family support services committed over a year ago have yet to be seen. I have serious concerns relating to prioritization for services and the status of DMR record-keeping and sharing.

Well my Aunt is under the Boulet lawsuit, and she has been treated anything like the Judge who made judgement over the case intended. For some reason we talk about all the things that she need, and nothing gets done. However, some how a $6,000.oo wheel chair got ordered for her and paid for by medicaid. Now you all need to know my Aunt can walk, that the wheel chair was only for when she got tired doing outings, it is NOT a lifestyle REQUIREMENT. They have since done modification to a CUSTOMIZED wheelchair and those costs are in the thousands. So we wonder where the Boulet money went, well it certainly was not to the proper people. Everyone seems to sit around a table and talk about what woudl be best for my aunt (Judy) and nothing gets acomplished. I WANT TO KNOW WHAT IS HAPPENING WITH THE BOULET MONITORS. And maybe you will see JUDY VS. DMR.......................
